Online course places are sold individually, are non-transferable and non-refundable once redeemed. Only one person may evidence completion of the online course per course registration.
To enable access to your online course we need to share some of your personal data with the RYA via your user profile in www.ryainteractive.org. This learning management website is hosted and maintained by a third party called Learning Pool, who will not use your personal information for any reason other than enabling your course.
Your name and email address will be entered on www.ryainteractive.org in order to create your user account. On your first access to the site, you will be asked to enter your address and date of birth. You will have access to the site for one year in order to complete your online course. During this period, your personal information will be held on the website by Learning Pool and be available to this training centre and the RYA for the purpose of managing your course.
Support will be provided remotely via email by Focus Marine instructors for a period of 8 weeks, commencing from the date of your online course booking.
On completion of your course, your name, email, date of birth and address will be transferred to the RYA’s central database for the purpose of recording details of the course and any certification you gain as a result of it. This information allows the RYA to record your certification, to update any records they may already hold about you or your qualifications and to verify your certificate if required. After one year from the date of your enrolment on the course, your user account will be removed from www.ryainteractive.org.
Full details of how the RYA will deal with your personal information will be displayed when you first access www.ryainteractive.org
Taking SRC exams at alternative RYA centres
Candidates can opt to take VHF SRC exams at any RYA Recognised Training Centre (RTC) with accreditation for VHF SRC specialised short courses. VHF Exam report forms will be sent to the RYA RTC of your choice – please note that for candidates wishing to take their exams abroad, there is an additional administrative fee of £25 + P&P which covers the cost of shipping and customs administration for sending forms abroad. Please contact the office if you have any queries regarding this.
We strongly encourage candidates who opt for eBook training materials (rather than a printed book) try a taster first, to ensure device compatibility – this should be done before redeeming an RYA eBook voucher. Once RYA eBook vouchers have been redeemed, they are non-refundable. See https://www.rya.org.uk/shop/Pages/eBook-Devices.aspx for more information, and for details of how to try a taster eBook.
Exam session bookings are non-transferrable, but the booking fee may be refunded (less an admin fee of £10.00) if notice of cancellation is received more than 10 working days in advance of the exam. If notice of cancellation is received less than 10 working days in advance of the booked place, the full exam session fee will be payable. In the event of non-attendance at the exam session, a re-booking fee of £12.00 will apply to secure a place at subsequent exam sessions.
Candidates must arrive at least 15 minutes before the start of their exam session. Late arrival will be recorded as non-attendance (see above).
Candidates must arrive with all of the required documentation demonstrating that they meet the pre-requisites for the exam. This is displayed for reference below, and is also displayed on the exam session booking page and will be emailed to each candidate upon receipt of an exam session booking, along with joining instructions. All candidates must produce all of the following documentation in order to commence the exam:
- Photo ID (Passport or Driving licence)
- A passport sized photograph
- Proof of eligibility (at least one of the following):
- Evidence of completing an RYA VHF SRC training course online – (certificate), or
- Evidence of attending a VHF SRC classroom course at an RYA Recognised Training Centre, or
- an RYA Restricted VHF certificate, or
- a suitable aviation GMDSS radio operator’s certificate
- RYA Certification fee payment receipt (see RYA Exam page for more details) – this is sent as a PDF file via email by the RYA upon completion of the RYA Exam Payment – please bring an original, signed printed copy with you to your exam.
Any candidates who arrive at the exam session less than 15 minutes before the advertised start time without all of the required documentation will be marked as non-attendance (see above). Documentation must be produced to the examiner at the exam session in order to attend the SRC exam.
Candidates will be informed of the exam outcome, in person, on the day of their exam.
Where candidates are successful in demonstrating the minimum requirements for both the written and practical assessments during their SRC exam, they will be recommended for the award of a VHF Short Range Certificate, issued by the RYA (Royal Yachting Association) on behalf of MCA (Maritime & Coastguard Agency) including Authority to Operate a VHF DSC and VHF-only radio telephone station established in a ship under a licence issued by the Secretary of State (subject to provisions of Section 52(5) of the Wireless Telegraphy Act 2006).
In the event that a candidate does not attend, or is unsuccessful at either the written and/or practical assessment, the full examination fee and exam session fee are non-refundable. Candidates are eligible to book further exam session(s) with Focus Marine at a discounted rate, subject to availability, or can opt to re-take their exam at any RYA Recognised Training Centre which offers Marine SRC examinations. Both elements (written and practical) must be passed during the exam visit in order for the candidate to be recommended for the Short Range Certificate. In the event that a candidate is not successful in demonstrating the required level of competence, the candidate will be given a full debrief by the examiner in person immediately following the exam. The decision of the RYA examiner is final; in the event of a dispute which cannot adequately be resolved in person, grievances can be submitted in writing to the RYA Certification Board: Royal Yachting Association, RYA House, Ensign Way, Hamble, Hants., SO31 4YA.
Fast Track applications
The RYA aims to process and return certification within approximately 21 days of receipt, however this can vary significantly depending on the time of year and demands placed upon the RYA certification department – in light of this, no guarantees are made by Focus Marine Ltd. or by the RYA with regard to the anticipated timescales of processing and return of certification.
For candidates who require a guaranteed, expedited turnaround: the RYA offers a paid Fast-track service whereby they undertake to turn the certificate around in 2 working days from receipt (often less) and return to the candidate by first class mail. The fees for use of this service are set and charged by the RYA, and at the time of writing were advertised as £34 to non-members, £21 to members, £16 to Accredited members, £10 to Gold members and free to Life members, in addition to the standard processing fee. Fees payable for the RYA for using their fast-track service are paid separately via telephone – please contact the RYA Certification team directly on 023 8060 4158
In order to ensure that your fast-track application is received promptly by the RYA, Focus Marine charges a £7.95 Royal Mail special delivery postage surcharge for all fast-track applications which covers the cost of expedited postage.
Please contact us in advance if you require your application to be Fast-Tracked.
